Liebe Freunde der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie,
nun steht es fest: Die Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie gehen in die 9. Auflage. Vom 22. bis zum 24. April 2016 steht Darmstadt wieder für ein Wochenende ganz im Zeichen der Fotografie – mit Ausstellungen an voraussichtlich 10 Orten zwischen Mathildenhöhe und Kunsthalle. Einer der Höhepunkte des Fotofestivals: Die Vergabe des 6. Merck-Preises der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie.
„Projektion – Fotografische Behauptungen“ – Das ist das Thema der 9. Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie.
Die Fotografie hat sich grundlegend verändert. Fotografische Referenzen werden gemeinhin als Beweise für Geschehenes und Gewesenes akzeptiert, obwohl sie in der digitalen Fotografie durch Algorithmen und Sensorsignale uminterpretiert wurden. Mit dem allmählichen Verschwinden der analog-chemischen Fotografie, verringert sich auch der Glaube an die Beweiskraft fotografischer Bilder.
In Umkehrung des historischen Selbstverständnisses, wird der Eingriff in den Bildwerdungsprozess zum eigentlichen Charaktermerkmal von Fotografie. Fakten, Fiktionen und Fantasien werden immer öfter zu schier unzerlegbaren Einheiten in der Präsentation von Fotografie zusammengefügt und verändern das Wesen der aktuellen Fotografie ebenso wie auch der Einsatz von bildgenerierenden Programmen und Verfahren. Errichten wir hiermit nur virtuelle Potemkinsche Dörfer oder verändert dieser Umgang mit dem Bild auch die Welt vor der Kamera?
Wir suchen Fotoarbeiten, die dieses neue Wesen der Fotografie erforschen, sowie auch Arbeiten, die versuchen diese Entwicklung fortzudenken oder sich dagegen aufzulehnen.
Merck-Preis der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie 2016
Zum 6. Mal wird unter den Ausstellern des Rahmenprogrammes der „Merck-Preis der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ verliehen. Die Jury wird etwa 30 Arbeiten für die Ausstellungen auswählen und daraus 3 Arbeiten für den „Merck-Preis der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ nominieren. Unter diesen 3 Nominierungen wird im Rahmen der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie im April 2016 der mit 7.000 Euro dotierte „Merck-Preis der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ vergeben. Die beiden anderen Nominierten erhalten je 1.500 Euro.
Die Jury tagt im Dezember und setzt sich zusammen aus den vier Initiatoren der Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie, Ute Noll (on-photography.com) und Prof. Kris Scholz (h_da Darmstadt).

Der Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain fördert das Festival im Rahmen seines temporären Schwerpunktthemas»Transit«. Damit betont er, welche Bedeutung eine Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenössischen Fotografie und ihrem sich verändernden Wesen für die Region hat.

Dear friends of Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie,
we are glad to announce, that there will be the next festival in 2016: from 22. – 24. April 2016.
The theme this time is: Projection – Photographic Assertions.
The „Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ developed 2004 from an initiative of photographers. The international festival is meanwhile named as one of most important german photography events. It places relevant themes and cultivates an interdisciplinary discourse in the photography.
A whole weekend photography exhibitions, symposium and discussions are giving the examination with photography a unique concentration. Beneath already established photographers in the main exhibition, also young artists have the chance to show their works. The mostly young photographers show their selected works within the supporting programme.
Apply for the supporting programme and the Merck-Award
Approximately 30 photographers out of the competition will show their works in the supporting programme in galleries, museums and off-places. We invite for participation in exhibitions in the supporting programme, to send single works or series to the main theme 2016:
Projection – Photographic Assertions
Photography has undergone fundamental changes. Photographic references are generally accepted as proof of what has happened and what has been, although, in the case of digital photography, they have been reinterpreted by means of algorithms and sensor signals. With the gradual disappearance of analogue chemical photography, belief in the probative force of photographic images is also receding.
In an inversion of its historical self-understanding, intervention in the image-making process is becoming photography’s actual character trait. Facts, fictions and fantasies are being ever more often combined to form virtually indecomposable units in the presentation of photography and are modifying the essence of current photography just as much as the use of image-generating programs and methods.
Are we hereby just building virtual Potemkin villages or are these dealings with the image modifying the world in front of the camera, too?
We are looking for photographic works which explore this new essence of photography, as well as works which attempt to think away this development or to revolt against it.
Merck-Award of the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie
The „Merck-Award of the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ is awarded for the 6th time. The jury nominates 3 works from the approximately 30 chosen participants of the supporting programme at the beginning of next year. Among this 3 nominees is the with 7.000 Euro endowed „Merck Award of Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie“ awarded to the best presented and closest to the topic work. The two other nominees will recieve 1.500 Euro each.
Members of the jury are: the four initiators of Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie, Ute Noll (on-photography.com) and Prof. Kris Scholz (h_da Darmstadt).
